Today, the estate is lovingly guided by Andrea, who has overseen the replanting of nearly all of its 12 hectares of vineyards — a deliberate bridge between everything the family has built and everything still to come. A story still being written, one harvest, one bottle, and one familia at a time.

Shortly after, in 2007, the estate joined the Le Chiantigiane winemaking consortium — a decision that opened new doors for both distribution and visibility. A small but meaningful step outward, a way of sharing the fruits of this land with a world beyond the hills of Maremma.

For decades, the grapes grown here were sold onward, destined to become someone else’s wine. But in 2006, that quietly changed. Drawing on generations of accumulated knowledge in the vineyard, Il Mustiaio began bottling its own wine for the very first time — in a cellar small in size but rich in ambition.

The land that named itself

Gino Savio, a sharp engineer from Rome, fell in love with Annamaria, the granddaughter of the family — and with this land. Toward the end of the 1970s, they took on a stretch of ground most would have walked past: rocky, wild, thick with the Mediterranean shrub known as “mustio” — the very plant that lends the estate its name. What looked barren proved perfect for vineyards, olive groves, and the proud Maremmano horses that still roam these hills.

The roots of this story reach back more than a century, to Andrea’s great-grandfather on his mother’s side, who first brought agriculture into the family’s life on the neighbouring farm of Il Marruchetone. A modest beginning — long before vineyards or wine were ever part of the picture — simply a family learning to work the land they called home.
